Past to Present I- Lessons from Early Settlements for Today
The purpose of studying history is to find lessons to apply to today. We would like to make informed decisions whenever possible so as to avoid repeating mistakes while building upon success.
What lessons did you find in our study of the early Spanish, English, French, and Dutch settlements in the Americas that apply to today? What about the world of 2014 seems similar to the world of 1492 through 1625?
Often, the lessons of history are expressed as generalizations. A generalization is a statement that can be proven true with specific examples. For example, consider this generalization:
When two peoples meet, lack of knowledge often leads to fear and mistrust.
What stories from our study of Early Settlements can you use to prove that generalization? What situations in the world today might prove the same generalization to be true?
Oh... you might want to try the online simulation about Jamestown. The Jamestown Online Adventure. Could you do better than the colonists shipped over by the Virginia Company in 1607? You'll learn some lessons from the results of your decisions, and you can share them here.
